What are the methods of tensile strength test for fabric?

The tensile strength test is a common method used to determine the strength and resistance of fabric materials against pulling forces. There are several methods available for conducting tensile strength tests on fabrics. Here are some of the commonly used methods:
 
1. Strip Test Method:
The strip test method involves cutting a strip of fabric with specified dimensions and clamping it between two grips. The grips are then pulled apart at a constant rate until the fabric strip breaks. The force required to break the fabric is recorded as the tensile strength.
 
2. Grab Test Method:
The grab test method is similar to the strip test method, but instead of cutting a strip, a sample of fabric with a specific shape and dimensions is used. The sample is held by two grips, and the grips are pulled apart until the fabric breaks. The force required to break the fabric is recorded as the tensile strength.
 
3. Tongue Tear Test Method:
The tongue tear test method measures the force required to propagate a tear in a fabric. The trapezoid tear test method is used to measure the resistance of a fabric to tearing. A trapezoidal-shaped specimen is cut from the fabric, with specific dimensions and angles. The grips of the testing machine are attached to the specimen, and the grips are pulled apart until the tear propagates through the fabric. The force required to tear the fabric is recorded as the tensile strength.
 
5. Elmendorf Tear Test Method:
The Elmendorf tear test method is often used for lightweight and flexible fabrics. A specimen of fabric is cut into a specific shape and is clamped in the testing machine. A pendulum with a sharp blade is released, and the blade tears through the fabric. The energy required to tear the fabric is measured and recorded as the tensile strength.
 
6. Strip Method using a Universal Testing Machine:
This method is similar to the strip test method, but it uses a universal testing machine instead of a specialized tensile strength testing machine. The fabric strip is clamped between the grips of the universal testing machine, and the grips are pulled apart at a constant rate until the fabric breaks. The force required to break the fabric is recorded as the tensile strength.
 
7. Single Yarn Strength Test Method:
In this method, individual yarns are extracted from the fabric and tested for their tensile strength. The yarns are clamped between the grips of the testing machine, and the grips are pulled apart until the yarn breaks. The force required to break the yarn is recorded as the tensile strength.
 
It's important to note that different testing standards and specifications may exist for each of these methods, depending on the specific application and industry requirements.
