Rubbing test BS EN ISO 105X12 specifies a method for determining the resistance of the colour of textiles of all kinds. The method is applicable to textiles made from all kinds of fibres in the form of yarn or fabric. Two tests may be made, one with a dry rubbing cloth and one with a wet rubbing cloth.

The ISO 105-X12 standard specifies the testing procedures and conditions necessary to assess the color fastness to rubbing of textiles. It helps determine the potential for color transfer from the tested textile to other materials during normal use or contact.

The standard covers various types of textiles, including dyed, printed, and coated fabrics, as well as textile floor coverings, carpets, and yarns. It provides guidelines for both wet and dry rubbing tests.

The ISO 105-X12:2016 standard consists of the following key components:

1. Test Apparatus:
The standard specifies the use of a crockmeter or a similar instrument for conducting the rubbing test. A crockmeter typically consists of a rubbing finger covered with a specific material (e.g., cotton or wool fabric) and a mechanism to apply a controlled rubbing action to the textile surface.

2. Test Specimens:
The standard defines the number, size, and preparation of test specimens for conducting the color fastness to rubbing test. The test specimens are typically cut from the textile samples and may undergo specific conditioning procedures before testing.

3. Rubbing Procedure:
The ISO 105-X12 standard provides detailed instructions on the rubbing procedure, including the number of rubbing strokes, the pressure applied, and the speed of rubbing. It specifies the use of a white or light-colored rubbing cloth or a colorfast cloth as the rubbing medium.

4. Evaluation:
After completing the rubbing test, the test specimens are evaluated visually for any color transfer or staining on the rubbing cloth. The standard defines rating scales or assessment methods for assigning a numerical or descriptive rating to the color fastness to rubbing performance.

5. Reporting:
Test results are reported, including details such as the textile type, testing conditions, rubbing procedure parameters, and the observed color fastness rating. This information allows for the comparison of different textiles and helps in making informed decisions regarding their suitability for specific applications.

It is important to note that ISO 105-X12 is just one of the parts in the ISO 105 series, which covers various aspects of color fastness testing for textiles. Each part focuses on a specific test method or parameter. ISO 105-X12 specifically addresses color fastness to rubbing.
