In the past, most of the Xenon Test Chamber/weather ometer used for accelerated natural weather exposure tests was a rotating drum, which was designed to place a xenon lamp tube in the center of the container, surrounded by a rotating sample holder, which rotates around the light source. This "rotating drum" was used in the carbon arc lamp accelerated aging tester in the early 20th century. Rotating drum Xenon Test Chamber has various models, some of which are vertical, and some are angled. This type of testing machine uses different methods to control various test parameters.

In recent years, the Xenon Test Chamber/weather ometer with static and flat sample placement has been widely used in plastics, coatings, textiles and other industries. Like the rotating drum Xenon Test Chamber, this static sample rack aging tester uses different methods to strictly control the test environment, and can control the irradiance, blackboard temperature, temperature and relative humidity of the aging test and other experimental parameters. The testing machine uses one or more xenon lamps as the exposure light source, and the samples are placed under the light source in parallel. This method increases the number of samples to be tested. At the same time, the power supply and the irradiation control system are patented to ensure the accuracy of the exposure. The reflection wall in the test case, that is, the light source reflection system, is designed to reflect radiant light uniformly and simulate natural light to the maximum extent. The temperature and relative humidity control device is also a patented design to ensure the stability and consistency of the test.

1. Specimen specifications

Use 7 types of plastic samples, their color and size.
Regardless of whether it is transparent or opaque plastic, its aging performance is yellowing, and transparent plastics are sensitive to light stability and light changes.

2. Experimental equipment

Rotating drum type Xenon Test Chamber: Ci 5000A type, Atlas Testing Company, USA; static sample rack Xenon Test Chamber: Q-sun Xe-3-HS type, USA Q-Panel Company.

3. Test standards

Taking automotive materials as an example, the aging performance of exterior materials is tested according to SAE J 2527 "Testing Standards for Accelerated Aging of Automotive Exterior Materials with Controlled Radiation Xenon Lamps"; the aging performance of interior materials is tested according to SAE J 2412 "Testing with Controlled Radiation Xenon Lamps" Accelerated Aging Standard for Automotive Interior Materials" test; color difference calculation is tested in accordance with ASTM D 2244 "Color Difference Calculation Standard for Instrument Measurement".

4. Experimental method

①, sample placement
The rotating drum type Xenon Test Chamber is to vertically place the samples on the upper, middle and lower layers. Each layer can hold 3 samples, for a total of 9 samples. If there are more than 9 samples, place them in a relative position around the center. The static sample rack Xenon Test Chamber puts the samples in 4 sample trays, each tray can hold up to 14 50 mm × 100 mm samples. Then place the sample pan in the testing machine. For automotive plastics such as PS and PC, no backing material is required on the sample holder. It is recommended to adjust the position of the sample plate every interval of a test period.
②, test conditions
The Xenon Test Chamber is equipped with a daylight filter to control the irradiance of light with a wavelength of 340 nm on the surface of the sample to 0.55W/m2, when the blackboard temperature is 63 ℃, the sunlight is irradiated for 102 minutes; when the temperature is random Sunlight and spray for 18 minutes; change the sample position once a week. The relative humidity control of the static sample rack Xenon Test Chamber is about 15%, and the relative humidity control of the rotating drum Xenon Test Chamber is 50%. The exposure cycle is 2000 h.
③、Aging measurement
The aging measurement adopts the reflectance mode of the integrating sphere spectrophotometer, adopts D65 illumination, 10° observation angle, wide-range measurement, including reflection and ultraviolet light source measurement. The aging of plastics is characterized by the yellow index (Δb). When measuring transparent materials, a white calibration plate is required. At the same time, the number of cracks should be measured at regular intervals. When the number of cracks on the plastic surface reaches 10, the sample should be taken out and the aging time should be recorded. The remaining samples are carried out in the above manner until 10 cracks appear in all the tested samples.
