Textile Alert: China's apparel exports to Japan to grow by 20% in 2022

From January to December 2022, Japan's imports of apparel and accessories rose by 23.2% to 3,494,110 million yen (US$26,483.96 million);
 
During the same period, imports from China amounted to ¥1,901,152 million (US$14,219 million), 20.1% higher than the same period in 2021.

According to provisional trade statistics released by the Japanese Ministry of Finance, Japan's imports of apparel and accessories increased by 23.2% to JPY 3,494,110 million (approximately US$26,483.96 million) from January to December 2022, accounting for 3% of Japan's total imports of JPY 118,164,219 million during the period under review.
 
From January to December 2022, imports of textile yarns and fabric fabrics amounted to JPY 1,261,222 million (approximately USD 9,426 million), an increase of 25.7% over the same period last year. According to the latest data, yarn and fabric imports accounted for 1.1% of Japan's total imports.
 
From January to December 2022, imports from China amounted to JPY 1,901,152 million (approximately US$14,219 million), 20.1 percent higher than the same period in 2021, and accounted for 7.7 percent of Japan's total imports from China. Imports of textile yarns and fabrics increased by 23.7% to ¥735,177 million (approximately US$5,498 million) during the period under review.
 
Between January and December 2022, Japan exported JPY772,688 million (approximately USD5,779 million) worth of textile yarns and fabrics, an increase of 15.2 percent year-on-year. Exports of textile machinery were valued at ¥301,414 million (US$2,254 million), up 26% compared to the January-December 2021 exports, accounting for 0.3% of total exports.
 
Exports of textile yarns and fabrics to the U.S. were ¥77,404 million (US$579 million), an increase of 10.8% compared to exports in 2021; they accounted for 0.4% of total exports to the U.S. from Japan in 2022 were ¥18,258,656 million (US$136,556 million). During the same period, exports of textile machinery to the United States increased by 37.5% to 13.83 billion yen (approximately US$103 million).
