Introduction to common flammability test methods and standards

Flammability testing is the process of testing and evaluating the performance of materials during combustion. The following is a summary of the common flammability test methods and test standards used by Standard International.
 

I. Horizontal combustion test method

 
The horizontal combustion test method is a commonly used method for testing the flammability of materials. The test procedure is to place the sample to be tested on a thin strip of wood placed horizontally, then ignite one end of the sample and observe its combustion within a specified period of time. The test results are usually compared using a rating method, such as the UL 94 rating.
 
Test standards: UL 94, ASTM D635, ISO 1210, etc.

II. vertical combustion test method

 
The vertical burning test method is another commonly used flammability test method. The test procedure of this method is to take a sample vertically and fix it on a thin vertical stand of wood, then ignite it once at the bottom of the sample and observe the burning of the sample within a specified period of time.
 
Testing standards: ASTM D3801, GB/T 8333, EN 71-2, etc.
 

III. Oxygen index test method

 
The oxygen index test method is a method for measuring the flammability of materials. The test principle is to record the combustion characteristics parameters of materials, such as ignition time and burning rate, at a fixed oxygen concentration. This test method can be used to test the combustion characteristics of various materials, such as plastics, textiles, flame-retardant materials, etc.
 
Test standards: ASTM D2863, GB/T 2406, ISO 4589-2, etc.

IV. Vertical flame-resistance test method

 
The vertical flame resistance test method is mainly used to measure the ability of various materials to withstand flame and thermal radiation within a predetermined period of time. The test method involves placing the samples upright and then exposing them to a predetermined amount of flame and thermal radiation in order to assess their fire resistance.
 
Test standards: ASTM D3801, GB/T 5464 etc.
 
The above are the more commonly used flammability test methods and test standards. Depending on the test requirements and the characteristics of the test object, the corresponding test methods and test standards can be selected.
