How to Perform an Oxygen Index Test?

The Oxygen Index Test is a method used to test the combustion properties of a material. The principle is to mix a material with oxygen and ignite it. The oxygen index of the material is the minimum value of oxygen concentration at which the material stops burning. The higher the oxygen index, the more difficult the material is to burn.

Oxygen index testing is usually carried out in a laboratory or specialist testing facility. The following are the general oxygen index testing steps.

1. Sample preparation: A sample of the polymer material is made into a standard size and shape. Often these samples need to be processed, cut or compressed so that they can be placed in the burner.

2. Mounting the sample: The sample is mounted in the stationary burner, ensuring that it is in the correct position and at the correct angle.

3. Setting the atmosphere: Inject an inert gas such as nitrogen to reduce the oxygen concentration in the burner to a very low level (usually below 18%). The oxygen concentration is then gradually increased until a combustion reaction occurs.

4. Observe the results: Record the various phenomena observed during the combustion process, such as ignition time, burning rate, smoke production, etc. Based on the test results, the oxygen index of the material is calculated.

What are the Oxygen Index Test Equipment?

Oxygen Index Tester: Determines the oxygen index of a material by measuring the time it takes for it to burn at a certain oxygen concentration.

Automatic Oxygen Index Tester: By automatically igniting and automatically adjusting the oxygen concentration, more accurate oxygen index testing can be achieved.

Pneumatic oxygen index tester: oxygen concentration is adjusted through a pneumatic control system to achieve oxygen index testing.

Combustion Test Chamber: Determines the oxygen index of a material by placing it in a combustion test chamber for a combustion test.

Flame burning tester: tests the burning properties of materials, including the oxygen index, by simulating a real fire scenario.

It is important to note that different types of polymeric materials may have different oxygen index testing methods and standards. It is advisable to understand the relevant testing standards and requirements before conducting an oxygen index test to ensure the accuracy and comparability of the test results.
