This instrument is mainly used to determine the shear strength of soil. Typically, four soil samples are used. Shear stress at failure was determined by applying horizontal forces under different vertical pressures (400 kPa, 300 kPa, 200 kPa, 100 kPa, and 50 kPa selectable). Then, the shear strength parameters, internal friction angle, and cohesion of the soil were determined according to Coulomb's law.

T0140-2019 Slow Shear Test, T0141 Consolidated Fast Shear Test, T0142 Fast Shear Test, and T0 176-2007 Drained Repeated Direct Shear Test, as specified in JTG 3430-2020 Highway Geotechnical Testing Standards.
