The ASTM D4772 test, otherwise known as the "Standard Test Method for Surface Water Absorption of Terry Fabrics (Water Flow)," defines a method for measuring the amount of water that can be absorbed by "terry fabrics." Terry fabric is the type of material often found in towels, bathrobes, and other items where high absorbency is needed.

The primary goal of ASTM D4772 is to evaluate the water-absorbing efficiency of terry fabrics, such as terry cloth, which is often used for its moisture-absorbing properties.   6. Testing Multiple Specimens: Multiple fabric specimens are typically tested, and the results are averaged to provide a single absorption rate for the fabric material.

The result of an ASTM D4772 test provides valuable information about the fabric's absorbency characteristics. This information is vital for manufacturers who produce towels, robes, wraps, or other items made from terry fabrics.

One important factor to remember is that the surface water absorption as determined by this test method is not just a property of the fibre, yarn, and construction, but also of the finishing procedures applied to the fabric.
