UL 94 is the standard for evaluating the flammability of plastic materials used in equipment and appliances. There are several different types of UL 94 tests that can be used to evaluate the burning characteristics of these materials. These tests are categorized into different levels and involve a variety of procedures. The following are the main types of UL 94 tests:

1. UL 94 Horizontal Burn Test (HB):
This test is used to evaluate the horizontal burning rate of a specimen. The specimen is placed horizontally and a flame is applied to one end. The test measures the time it takes for the flame to reach a specific location on the specimen and whether the flame extinguishes itself. Results include ratings of HB, V-2, and V-0, with V-0 being the highest rating for self-extinguishing flame.

2. UL 94 Vertical Flame Test (V-0, V-1, and V-2):
This test evaluates the vertical flame characteristics of a material. The material is placed vertically and the flame is applied to its lower end. The ratings are as follows:
   - V-0: Material self-extinguishes within 10 seconds without producing any flame droplets.
   - V-1: Material self-extinguishes within 60 seconds and allows a limited number of flame drops.
   - V-2: Material self-extinguishes in 60 seconds but allows more flame drops than V-1.

3. UL 94 Vertical Burn Test (5VA and 5VB):
This test is used for thicker materials. It evaluates the burning characteristics of materials that are thicker than those tested in the V-0, V-1, and V-2 tests. The ratings are as follows:
   - 5VA: Material self-extinguishes within 60 seconds and does not produce any flame droplets.
   - 5VB: Material self-extinguishes in 60 seconds, but flame dripping is permitted.

4. UL 94 Infrared Test (GWFI and GWIT):
This test measures a material's resistance to ignition when exposed to a hot wire. There are two ratings:
   - GWFI (Infrared Ignition Temperature Index): Indicates the maximum temperature at which a material will not ignite.
   - GWIT (Infrared Ignition Temperature): Indicates the lowest temperature at which a material will ignite.

5. UL 94 Horizontal Burn Test (HBF):
For materials used in furniture and upholstered furniture. The test measures the horizontal burning characteristics of these materials.

UL 94 testing is essential for evaluating the fire safety of plastic materials used in a variety of products. The specific tests used depend on the type of material and its intended application. The resulting ratings help manufacturers and regulatory agencies determine the suitability of these materials for various applications.
