The filtration efficiency is tested under the particle size specified in the standard, and different standards will use different sizes of particles for testing. Bacterial aerosol particles with an average particle diameter of 3μm are often used for BFE, while sodium chloride particles with a diameter of 0.075μm are generally used for PFE. From the filtering effect alone, PFE is more effective than BFE.

According to GB2626-2006 respiratory protective mask standard, respiratory protective mask belongs to individual protective equipment, and its main filtering requirements are for PFE. This kind of mask usually has three or more layers, mainly relying on the middle meltblown layer for filtering, and it is used in the environment exposed to high concentration pollution or high concentration particles.

The difference between this mask and surgical mask in structure is that its sealing performance is much better. The covering effect of this mask and the pulling force of wearing elastic band are much stronger than those of surgical mask.

If you have used this mask, you will find that breathing is much more laborious than that of surgical mask. This kind of mask needs to have a certain structural support strength, which is precisely because of its good sealing performance, which leads to great breathing resistance.

Surgical masks are different from respiratory masks in function emphasis. Surgical masks pay more attention to the protection of splashing droplets. Because of the poor sealing performance of surgical masks, the filtering effect of surgical masks on particles in high concentration environment is not as good as that of respiratory masks.

There is also GB19083-2010 medical protective mask standard, which is equivalent to respiratory protective mask with increased requirements on blood prevention and high temperature, but its PFE filtration efficiency grades are classified according to grades.

One grade with low zui also needs to meet KN95 requirements of ≥95% filtration efficiency, Grade 2 ≥99% filtration efficiency and Grade 3 ≥99.97% filtration efficiency. Medical protective masks are mainly used for respiratory protection of occupational medical staff and belong to medical devices.
