You may often see BFE and PFE when you search for the mask particle filtration efficiency testing equipment. If you are not a professional, you may confuse these two words. Qinsun is a professional mask testing equipment manufacturer. We just produced and sold Mask PFE Tester and BFE Tester. Today, let's talk about the difference between these two devices.

The filter materials of masks are basically melt-blown non-woven fabrics made of polypropylene, and factors such as pore size and thickness of fibers affect the filtering effect. Particles with different diameters are filtered by different principles, such as particle volume, impact, diffusion principle, and some particles are filtered by electrostatic fibers by electrostatic attraction principle.

BFE Tester

Pfe (particle filtration efficiency): refers to the filtration efficiency of particles. The larger the value, the better the filtration effect.

BFE (Bacterial filtration efficiency): refers to the filtration efficiency of bacteria. The higher the value, the better the filtration effect.

The filtration efficiency is tested under the particle size specified in the standard, and different standards will use different sizes of particles for testing. Bacterial aerosol particles with an average particle diameter of 3μm are often used for BFE, while sodium chloride particles with a diameter of 0.075μm are generally used for PFE. From the filtering effect alone, PFE is more effective than BFE.

Surgical masks are different from respiratory protective masks in function emphasis, and surgical masks pay more attention to the protection of splashing droplets. Because of the poor sealing performance of surgical masks, the filtering effect of surgical masks on particles in high concentration environment is not as good as that of respiratory protective masks.

The PFE test of surgical masks is quite different from that of respiratory protective masks, which can't be compared. Under the test conditions of GB2626-2006, the filtration efficiency of surgical masks with high PFE (> 95%) may not be as high as 70%, so this is the reason why the filtration efficiency of KN95 masks made of the filter material of surgical masks BFE99 often does not meet the requirements.
