What is the breathing resistance of a surgical mask and What is a medical surgical mask?

A medical surgical mask is a mask worn by medical staff at work. They are mainly used in demanding medical environments such as medical outpatient clinics, laboratories and operating theatres, where the safety factor is relatively high and the resistance to bacteria and viruses is strong. It is often used to prevent the spread of influenza and respiratory diseases. It is still very useful for this pneumonia transmission.

What does a medical surgical mask do?

Medical surgical masks can block particles larger than 4 microns in diameter. Tests carried out in a mask containment laboratory in a hospital environment have shown that medical surgical masks have a transmission rate of 18.3% for particles of 0.3 microns according to general medical standards. Medical surgical masks can essentially block 70% of the contaminants.

What standards do medical surgical masks need to meet?

1 Filtration efficiency: no less than 30% for aerodynamic median diameter 0.240.06m sodium chloride aerosols at an air flow rate of 302L/min.

2 Bacterial filtration efficiency: a filtration efficiency of not less than 95% for aerosols of Staphylococcus aureus with an average particle diameter of 30.3m under specified conditions.

3 Respiratory resistance: under filtering efficiency flow conditions, inspiratory resistance not exceeding 49 Pa and expiratory resistance not exceeding 29.4 Pa.

4 Synthetic blood penetration: after 2ml of synthetic blood is sprayed onto the outer side of the mask at a pressure of 16.0kPa 120mmHg, no penetration should occur on the inner side of the mask.

Correct wearing method for medical surgical masks:

1 Wash your hands well before wearing the mask and avoid touching the inner side of the mask during the wearing process to reduce the possibility of the mask being contaminated.

2When wearing the mask, distinguish clearly between the inside and outside, top and bottom of the mask, with the light-coloured side inside and the dark-coloured side facing outwards, and the metal strip with the nose clip at one end being the top of the mask, with the folded side fully expanded.

3 Turn the side with the nose clip upwards and wrap the mouth, nose and jaw fully, adjust the lower end of the mask to the appropriate position on the jaw, hang the rubber bands on both sides over both ears or tie the two ends at the back of the head, then press the nose clip to make the mask fit completely with the face.

Although n95 and medical surgical masks offer the best protection, if you are not going to places with high traffic or in direct contact with patients, you can use disposable medical masks and kn5 masks without using n95 and medical surgical masks.
