In the textile industry, the Martindale and Wyzenbeek test methods are two ways of measuring the abrasion resistance of fabrics.

Martindale test

The Martindale Abrasion Tester is suitable for testing the abrasion resistance and pilling of knitted fabrics, woollen fabrics, artificial leather and synthetic leather under pressure, and is used in a variety of industries such as textiles, footwear and clothing.
Martindale Abrasion Tester

Test principle:

1. Round fabric specimens under a certain pressure, and standard abrasives according to the Lissajous curve of the trajectory of mutual friction, resulting in specimens broken, with the number of specimens broken wear resistance expressed fabric wear resistance.

2. Round specimens and fabrics of the same material are rubbed against each other under a given pressure with the Lissajous curve and after a specified number of revolutions, the specimens are assessed for pilling.

Wyzenbeek test

The Wyzenbeek Abrasion Tester is used for testing the abrasion resistance of textiles used in automotive interiors and furniture, in standard friction media or on curved surfaces such as metal mesh.
Oscillatory Abrasion Tester

Test principle:

A long strip of fabric is mounted on the front and rear clamps of the abrasive head and a certain tension is applied. On the circular abrasive table, the abrasive medium is mounted so that the specimen is in contact with the abrasive medium and a certain load is applied to the specimen.
